What's PPP?
The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was a loan initiative under the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) aimed at helping businesses, maintain their payroll and cover other essential expenses during the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here's how it worked:
Application: Businesses would apply for a PPP loan through a participating lender. The application required the business to provide documentation of your payroll costs and other eligible expenses.
Loan Amount: The maximum loan amount was generally 2.5 times the average monthly payroll costs, up to $10 million for the first draw of PPP loans. There was also a second draw for businesses that had used up their first loan and were still facing financial hardship, with similar calculations but a cap of $2 million.
Use of Funds: The funds from the PPP loan were intended to be used for specific business-related expenses. The primary purpose was payroll support, including salaries, wages, and benefits for employees. However, businesses could also use the funds for rent, utilities, mortgage interest payments, and other operational costs.
Forgiveness: One of the most attractive features of the PPP was loan forgiveness. If businesses used the loan for the eligible expenses within a specified period (originally 8 weeks, later extended to 24 weeks) and maintained employee headcount and compensation levels, businesses could apply for forgiveness. Essentially, the loan would be turned into a grant.
Documentation for Forgiveness: To have the loan forgiven, businesses needed to provide documentation to your lender showing how you used the funds. This included payroll records, tax filings, and receipts for eligible expenses.
Interest and Terms: If any part of the loan wasn't forgiven, it would convert to a term loan with a low interest rate and a repayment period that could vary (initially 2 years, later extended to 5 years for loans made after June 5, 2020).
